Venice is a lagoon city in northeastern Italy and forms the capital of the Veneto region.

Of the almost 420 square kilometers, more than 60 percent is water. Overall, the urban area is home to around 275,000 inhabitants, of which almost 60,000 live in the historic center of Venice.

Venice and its settlements are located on alluvial land and were added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1987. Like Paris, Venice is often referred to as the “City of Love”.

The city center is one of the most visited destinations in Europe. A distinction is made between the laguna morta (dead lagoon) in the north, which is mainly fed by fresh water, from the salt water lagoon Laguna viva.
