Varadero, Cuba Weather and Climate

General & Geography

Varadero is not a classic town, but mainly refers to the approximately 20 kilometers long Hicacos peninsula.

Originally settled by indigenous tribes, the once heavily forested peninsula was increasingly opened up for bathing tourism. Today there are a large number of high-class hotel complexes in Varadero directly on the long sandy beach.

Almost all residents live from tourism, but local life and the original culture of Varadero have declined sharply under the influence of the widespread all-inclusive concept in the holiday resorts.

According to abbreviationfinder, Varadero is located around 150 kilometers east of the capital of Cuba. Not far from the city is the Varadero International Airport (Juan Gualberto Gómez), which has the second highest number of passengers in the country after Havana.

From Germany, CONDOR flies non-stop to Varadero, the flight time is around 11 hours.

Climate in Varadero (Cuba)

The climate on the Varadero peninsula is typically tropical with only minor temperature fluctuations. It is influenced by the northeast trade wind and can therefore be divided into a fairly dry winter time and a significantly more humid summer season. However, there are no classic seasons like in Germany.

In the coldest month of January an average of 26.3 ° C is measured during the day, in the hottest month of August it is an average of 31.7 ° C. Even at night, the thermometer rarely falls well below the 20 degree mark. The rainy season on Varadero runs from around the beginning of May to the end of October.

During this humid, sometimes humid summer season there is also the risk of tropical cyclones, the hurricane season officially runs from June to October. Statistically, the risk is highest from August to October. However, climate change keeps causing shifts and surprises.

Due to the holiday season in Europe the summer in Varadero is still absolute peak season, will also visit many Cubans especially around the anniversary of the revolution (26 ‘ July) their summer residences. July and August therefore have the highest overall overnight prices on Varadero.

When is the best time to visit Varadero?

We have now seen several brochures and websites by German tour operators that state that the best travel time for Varadero and Cuba in general is those months that are actually the least climatically suitable. Behind this are probably business interests for the main summer season.

It is therefore important to us to be completely honest with our readers: Basically, Varadero is actually easy to travel to all year round. And those who are dependent on the summer holidays can hardly avoid the months of July and August. Nevertheless, the described climatic conditions are not exactly ideal.

We therefore recommend mid- November to mid- April as the best travel time in Varadero (Cuba). The most stable and pleasant travel climate is from Christmas to the end of March. With water temperatures of 24 to 30 ° C, bathing is generally possible all year round.
