Environment

The vegetation is luxuriant everywhere, with a prevalence of banyans, kauri (conifers of the genus Agathis) and precious essences in tropical forests, while in the southern islands, with a drier climate, there are grassland areas typical of the savannah; overall, the forests occupy 36.1% of the national territory, long sacrificed to make way for agriculture or compromised by the violent cyclones that hit the islands. The native fauna is quite small and includes some species of bats, a large number of birds, as well as reptiles, amphibians, corals and fish; dogs, cats, cattle, pigs and sheep were instead introduced by Europeans. In addition to deforestation, the islands are affected by rising sea levels which, accompanied by poor soil stability due to volcanic and seismic activity, puts fresh water reserves at risk. There are no national parks.
