According to COUNTRYAAH, Uzbekistan is a State of Central Asia (447,400 km²). Capital: Tashkent. Administrative division: provinces (12), autonomous republic (1). Population: 27,313,700 (2008 estimate). Language: Uzbek (official), Russian, Tajik. Religion: Muslims 88%, non-religious / atheists 11%, Orthodox 1%. Monetary unit: sum (plural sumy, 100 teen). Population
The population is mainly made up of Uzbeks (78.3%), but there are also significant minorities of Tajiks (4.7%), Kazakhs (4.1%), Tatars (3.3%), Russians (2.5 %), and caralpachi (2.1%), as well as Koreans (0.9%), Kyrgyz (0.9%) etc. After independence there has been an increase in Uzbeks and a decline in other groups, particularly in Russia. The density is 61 residents / km², but the distribution is not homogeneous: only a fifth of the residents live in the north-western area (Autonomous Republic of Caracalpachi, Navoj, Horezm and Buhara) while the remainder is concentrated in the smaller south-eastern provinces., the most populous of which are Samarkand, Tashkent and Fergana (rich region bordering Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan). Just over a third of the population lives in the city: the only real urban center is the capital Tashkent, the only one with more than one million residents; other major cities are Namangan, Andižan, headquarters of industries, and Samarkand, the ancient capital, an important historical and cultural center of the country. The other provincial capitals do not exceed 250,000 residents.
Environment
Most of the territory is covered by the typical vegetation of the Central Asian deserts, called tugai, with bushes and grass, which is home to the wolf, the fox, the gazelle, the antelope. The Uzbek riparian forest, in particular that along the Amudar’ja river, has largely disappeared and the habitat of protected species such as the Buhara deer has also disappeared; in 2002 the WWF, together with local authorities, has prepared projects for the protection of this ecosystem. In the mountain areas live wolves, bears, deer, wild boars, ibex as well as numerous species of birds. The pollution of the land and water, caused by the use of pesticides and other harmful agents in agriculture (especially for the intensive cultivation of cotton), has also had serious repercussions on the health of the population and is one of the causes of the progressive salinization of the soils, but it is the evaporation of the Aral Sea and the disappearance of its ecosystem that represent the most urgent issue facing the country. 1.9% of the territory is a protected area and includes two national parks and various other protected areas.
