There are no separations between the different ethnic components, which on the contrary are very mixed in the territory: mixed families are the norm. In much of the country (with the exception of only the westernmost regions) the Ukrainian language, which became the official language and only taught in school after 1991, is less spoken than Russian, which remains the commercial language. There are very many Ukrainians who live permanently outside the country, who have long since been dispersed in the other states of the former USSR or who have emigrated to the West in recent years. Ukraine has a high rate of urbanization: there are many cities with more than 200. 000 residents while the countryside, especially in the eastern part of the country, is relatively depopulated. The capital Kijev has 2,770,014 residents. (2009 estimate; approx. 3,200,000 with the urban agglomeration) and is not only the largest city, the only one with a metropolitan dimension, but also the place of maximum concentration of the Ukrainian artistic and cultural heritage; in its oldest part, on the right bank of the Dnieper, there are palaces, churches and monasteries that date back to the beginning of the second millennium; the city also hosts a notable industrial sector, especially light industry, and is the nerve center of communications and national transport. Another center of primary importance is Kharkiv, a large modern and industrial city in eastern Ukraine, which for short historical periods played the role of capital and still presents itself as the eastern rival of Kiev; in the south-eastern part of the country there is a series of large industrial and worker cities that play the role of steel poles, such as Dnipropetrovs’k, Zaporizhzhia, and Kryvyi Rih, or mining, such as Donets’k; Mariupol ‘ is an industrial port on the Azov Sea while Odessa, once the main port of the Tsarist empire on the Black Sea, today suffers somewhat from its geographically marginal position. Finally L’viv (Lviv) is the oldest and most important Catholic and peasant center of Western Ukraine, and in recent decades it has represented the political (and electoral) heart of independence nationalism, facing neighboring Poland and the West. The overall population density in the area is 76 residents / km². The demographic indices are very negative, with the number of deaths (death rate 16.4 per thousand, 2007) constantly higher than that of births (birth rate 10.2 per thousand, 2007) and a fertility rate (1, 3, 2007) to European lows. Life expectancy at birth is approx. 63 years for males and 74 for females.
