It is bordered by Argentina to the west and Brazil to the north and northeast. The country has a temperate climate with warm summers and mild winters. The highest point in Uruguay is Cerro Catedral which stands at 514 meters above sea level. Higher education in Uruguay is offered by both public and private universities. There are currently more than 20 universities offering courses in various disciplines from undergraduate to doctoral levels. The oldest university in Uruguay is the University of the Republic which was established in 1849 as an independent institution offering higher education to citizens of the country.
