It has a total area of 83,600 km2 and a population of over 9. 5 million people. The country has a desert climate with hot summers and mild winters. The highest point in the UAE is Jabal Jais which stands at 1,910 meters above sea level. Higher education in the UAE is offered by both public and private universities. There are currently more than 40 universities offering courses in various disciplines from undergraduate to doctoral levels. The oldest university in the UAE is the United Arab Emirates University which was established in 1976 as an independent institution offering higher education to citizens of the country. Other public universities include Khalifa University; Higher Colleges of Technology; United Arab Emirates University among others. There are also several private universities such as Zayed University; American University of Sharjah (AUS); Abu Dhabi University (ADU) among others which offer courses in various disciplines from undergraduate to postgraduate levels.
