It has a total area of 75,517 square kilometers and a population of around 4. 2 million people. Panama is known for its diverse geography which includes mountains, rainforests, coastlines, islands and wetlands. The education system in Panama is overseen by the Ministry of Education (MEDUCA) which works to ensure that all children have access to quality education and that standards are met throughout the educational system. Education in Panama is divided into three levels: primary (ages 6-12), secondary (ages 13-15) and postsecondary (ages 16-18). Primary school is free and compulsory for all children aged 6-12. At this level students learn basic literacy skills such as reading, writing and arithmetic as well as science, geography, history and physical education. English language instruction is also provided at this level with an emphasis on developing speaking skills as well as listening comprehension. Secondary school consists of two cycles: grades 7-9 followed by grades 10-12. Students at this level focus on core academic subjects such as mathematics, science, language arts and social studies while also taking elective courses including art or music to develop their interests further. At this stage students may also choose to participate in vocational training programs offered by technical schools such as hospitality management or automotive repair if they wish to pursue a career in those areas after graduation. Postsecondary education includes universities providing degree programs across a wide range of disciplines including business studies, engineering or medicine among others. These institutions provide students with an opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills further in preparation for life after graduation through research projects or internships which can be completed during their studies or upon completion of their degree program. Overall, Panama’s educational system provides citizens with an opportunity to gain knowledge about their culture while also pursuing higher education opportunities if they wish to do so.
