It is the smallest country in the European Union, with a total area of 316 square kilometers, and has a population of around 475,000 people. The country is divided into five regions: Gozo, Comino, Northern Harbour District, Southern Harbour District and Greater Valletta. The education system in Malta follows a three-tier structure consisting of primary school (lasting six years), secondary school (lasting four years) and tertiary level education (university or college). Primary and secondary school are free to attend for all citizens while university or college level education requires tuition fees to be paid. In addition to this there are also vocational training centers available for students who wish to pursue a career in technical or manual labor. The government has implemented various initiatives aimed at improving access to quality education for all citizens such as free textbooks and school uniforms for primary school students as well as providing scholarships for those pursuing higher education.
