It covers an area of 1,098,581 km2 and is known for its diverse geography which includes the Andes mountain range in the west and the Amazon Basin in the east. The country is divided into nine departments: Beni, Chuquisaca, Cochabamba, La Paz, Oruro, Pando, Potosí, Santa Cruz and Tarija. Education in Bolivia is provided by both public and private institutions at all levels from pre-primary to tertiary. The national education system is regulated by the Ministry of Education and Science (MEC) which sets educational policies for all levels of education. Primary school education is free and compulsory for all children aged 6-14 years old while secondary school education is also free but not compulsory; students must take an entrance exam before being admitted into secondary schools which are offered through public or private institutions. Tertiary education can be obtained from universities or technical colleges at undergraduate or postgraduate level with programs ranging from engineering to business management or health sciences. There are currently 19 universities across Bolivia offering degree programs with most universities offering distance learning courses as well as online platforms providing various degrees from universities such as Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (UMSA) or Universidad Católica Boliviana “San Pablo” (UCB). In addition to formal education institutions there are several non-formal training centers providing vocational training courses such as carpentry or welding which aim to provide students with the necessary skills needed to enter the workforce. The government has also implemented a number of initiatives such as Bibliotecas Escolares (school libraries) which provide access to books for students who may not have access to them otherwise. Overall Bolivia has made significant progress towards increasing access to quality education for all citizens over recent years; however there remains much work still to be done in terms of improving educational infrastructure and resources across all levels of education throughout the country.
