State Route 126 in Oregon

State Route 126 is a state route and partial freeway in the U.S. state of Oregon. The road connects east-west from Florence on the Pacific Ocean via Eugene to US 20 at Prineville. The road is 329 kilometers long.

Travel directions

State Route 126 begins in the coastal city of Florence on US 101. The road follows the Siuslaw River inland through a densely forested and slightly mountainous area that is sparsely populated. There are hardly any places on this part of the route. The mountains are no higher than a few hundred meters. After about 70 kilometers you reach the flatter Willamette Valley, a vast agricultural area. Here one reaches the city of Eugene. State Route 126 runs along with Interstate 105 and is east of Interstate 5an individual highway of 9 kilometers in length. This is the Springfield suburb bypass. East of Eugene, the road follows the McKenzie River through mountainous terrain. To the east are higher snow-capped mountains with peaks up to 3,100 meters, but the mountains in the immediate vicinity of State Route 126 are not that high. The road ends near Prineville on US 20.

History

The route had been numbered US 28 in 1926, but this number was dropped west of Eugene in 1937. In 1951, the number was completely dropped and the road was renumbered as State Route 126.

The road between Florence and Eugene was completed in 1957 and provided access to the coast from the Willamette Valley. A highway through western Eugene, the Roosevelt Freeway, was planned in the 1960s. This plan was scrapped in 1978. However, Interstate 105 had already been constructed by then, as well as the Springfield bypass on the east side of Eugene.

Traffic intensities

In 2010, 3,900 to 6,100 vehicles drove daily between Florence and Eugene and 19,000 vehicles on the western edge of Eugene. West of downtown, 27,000 vehicles and 58,000 to 76,000 were on the dual-numbering Interstate 105. East of I-5, 30,000 to 60,000 vehicles were on the freeway portion. 29,000 vehicles drove east from Springfield, dropping to 3,000 vehicles outside Springfield and 1,600 vehicles at the terminus at US 20.

State Route 217 in Oregon

State Route 217 is a state route and freeway in the U.S. state of Oregon. The road is entirely a highway and passes through the western suburbs of the city of Portland. It is a partial bypass of the city. The highway is 13 kilometers long.

Travel directions

The road branches off from Interstate 5 at Tigard, and has 2×2 lanes for its entire length. In Beaverton, SR-217 connects to US 26.

History

The highway was built in the 1970s as a tangential connection between the suburbs west of Portland.

Traffic intensities

Between 90,000 and 116,000 vehicles use the highway every day, making the road busy given the number of lanes.
