Geographical location

According to abbreviationfinder, Salalah (official transcription Ṣalāla) is a coastal city in the southwestern part of the Sultanate of Oman. The village, located directly on the Indian Ocean, is an up-and-coming holiday destination, which is also known as the “Caribbean of the Orient” due to its beautiful beaches.

In the recent past several high-class holiday resorts have settled below the imposing Dhofar Mountains, which have made a major contribution to the region’s tourist boom.

After modernization, Salalah International Airport will now also be served several times a week directly from Germany. There are also practical domestic connections to the capital Muscat and Arab destinations such as Dubai, Kuwait and Qatar.

The distance between Muscat (Muscat) and Salala is around 870 kilometers. The flight time to Salalah from Germany (e.g. with Eurowings non-stop from Cologne) is around 7 hours.

Climate in Salalah

Salalah and the Dhofar region on the Arabian Sea have a climate that differs significantly from the rest of Oman. This is mainly due to the strong influence of the Khareef monsoon wind, which ensures an extraordinary rainy season in Salalah from mid- June to early September.

Although our climate table for the region shows very little rain that can actually be measured, the Khareef monsoon resembles a kind of spray frost – comparable to damp clouds of mist – and conjures up lush vegetation in the otherwise barren sultanate.

The warm, humid air often hangs low over the landscape and is so unique that every year numerous Arabs travel to the Salalah area especially for this natural spectacle. So there is a second main season at this travel time, which the hoteliers are of course very happy about.

When to go to Salalah

For Europeans and normal beach holidaymakers, the time of the Khareef is usually rather unsuitable, the weather is perceived as rather oppressive and too damp. We therefore recommend the period from the beginning of October to the beginning of May as the best time to travel to Salalah.

Shortly afterwards, extreme heat sets in from the beginning of May until the onset of great humidity, so June in particular is rather unsuitable for most holidaymakers. For the reasons mentioned, this also applies to the classic summer vacation months of July and August, even if many organizers tempt with specials.

The annual average temperature is 25.7 ° C. For comparison: Munich reaches an average of 8.6 ° C, in Berlin it is 9.6 ° C. The warmest month is June (29.1 ° C), coldest month of January with mean values of 22.5 ° C. The maximum water temperature is 29 ° C. Comfortable bathing is possible at these temperatures. All months have a water temperature of at least 21 ° C and are therefore suitable for a beach holiday.

The main focus of a vacation in Salalah is undoubtedly the beautiful, kilometer-long beach and the high-class resorts. Some of the most popular hotels include the Hilton Salalah, Crowne Plaza, Salalah Rotana and the Juweirah Boutique Hotel. A visit to the Salalah souk is highly recommended.

The dolphin tours are also very popular and regularly shine not only with sightings of the cute “flippers”, but with a little luck even sea turtles snorkeling. The Oasis Club Salalah in the port of Salalah offers pleasant nightlife.
