Population
The population is almost entirely made up of people of African origin (90%); there are also mulattoes (5%) and minorities of Asians (3%) and Europeans (1%). Most of the residents live in Saint Kitts, the remainder in Nevis, with an average density of 152 residents / km². The only important center is the capital, Basseterre), on the southwestern coast of the island of Saint Kitts while the main town of Nevis is Charlestown.
Environment
The vegetation is typically tropical: the islands are populated by mammals, some of which, such as the green monkey and the mongoose, imported by the colonizers, and by birds (frigates, pelicans, herons, terns, bullfinches, etc.). Equally varied and rich is the marine fauna, which includes protected species. The forest, cut down in ancient times to make way for sugar cane plantations, covers 13.9% of the territory even if the authorities have approved development plans to encourage forms of eco-sustainable tourism, also establishing two national parks, which occupy the 0, 8% of the state area. Worth noting is the presence of the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park (1690-1790), a cultural site listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1999.
