Legislative power is exercised by the Parliament, made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate, whose members remain in office for 4 years. The judicial system is based on the Common Law British, Islamic law and tribal customs. The top of the judiciary is the Federal Supreme Court, whose judges are appointed by the central government. Then there are the Federal Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court. Each state also has a High Court and, upon request, an Islamic court, where Islamic law is applied.
