The regions of Gagauzia (with a majority of Turkic-speaking ethnicity) and Transdniestria (with a Russian majority), which had already proclaimed their independence in 1990, have been recognized a statute of special autonomy; Transdniestria, however, insists on considering itself an independent state (even if not recognized by any government) with capital Tiraspol ‘and maintains its own completely separate system, with its own president, government, armed forces, police and currency, a different time from that of the rest of the country and a social system still inspired by that of the USSR. The Parliament, which has a single chamber of 101 deputies, is renewed every four years and the term of office of the President of the Republic, elected by Parliament on the basis of a July 2000 amendment to the Constitution passed on December 27, 1994, also lasts. The judicial system is partially autonomous from the executive and reports to a Constitutional Court; the death penalty was abolished in 1995, the school system, which until the end of the 1980s was an integral part of the Soviet one and therefore largely Russified, drastically changed after independence, with the introduction of Romanian literature and history into the curriculum.
