Miami, Florida Weather and Climate

General and geography

Short for MIP by abbreviationfinder, Miami is a city in the south of the Sunshine State Florida. The rather busy business city of Miami has to be differentiated from the much more interesting neighboring city of Miami Beach.

Miami Beach is located on a long island on the Atlantic Ocean and borders the towns of Bal Harbor; Surfside as well as the larger metropolis of Miami. The transitions between the two urban areas are fluid in some places.

Since the 1980s, the South Beach area has increasingly become the flagship of Miami Beach, where, in addition to a large number of high-class hotels and clubs, the most important attractions can be found.

On the beach of the same name, tourists encounter the “beautiful and rich”, not least the popular television series Miami Vice contributed significantly to the somewhat diva-like image of South Beach.

The world famous Art Deco district is one of the most photographed neighborhoods in the United States. The north of Miami Beach, on the other hand, is mainly residential and less touristy.

You can get to Miami Beach either directly via the large Miami airport or via one of the many other airports in Florida, for example in Fort Lauderdale, which is just 30 kilometers north.

Miami (Beach) climate summary

The climate in Miami can be described as a tropical monsoon climate, which is characterized by year-round warm temperatures. The Gulf Stream has a moderating effect in the region and generally prevents extreme heat waves or unusual cold phases.

Between the day and night values are around 8 to 9 degrees all year round, the same difference applies statistically between the coldest month of January (24 degrees during the day, 15 degrees at night) and the hottest month of July (day: 32 degrees, night: 24 degrees). This constancy ensures that no four classic seasons are distinguished.

In general, there are two main climate phases in Miami and Miami Beach. Winter is warm and rather dry (dry season), while the summer months are hot and rather humid (rainy season). Statistically speaking, there is an average of 4 out of 10 days of rain – mostly short – in summer.

Nevertheless, especially between May and October, monsoon-like downpours can occur, which flood entire streets. Generally speaking, the humidity is very high in summer and on some days it is felt to be oppressive. The rainy season in Miami largely coincides with the annual hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean.

Officially, the hurricane season in the Atlantic lasts from the beginning of June to the end November, with the highest risk of the formation of tropical cyclones (hurricanes) mainly in the second half of August and in September. Direct hits are extremely rare; locals and hoteliers are usually well prepared anyway.

When is the best time to visit Miami Beach?

Despite the rather humid summer months, the entire period from March to the end of August is considered the absolute peak season in Miami and the entire state of Florida. Neither foreign tourists nor Americans are put off by the possible rain any more than by the theoretical danger of a hurricane.

In fact, Miami Beach averages 10 hours of sunshine during the summer, and even on days with heavy rainfall, the rain rarely lasts longer than an hour. Afterwards, the sky often clears up again, and the temperatures at this time during the day are above 30 degrees anyway.

Nevertheless, we recommend the months of November to April for a trip to Miami or Miami Beach as the absolute best travel time. The first half of May is also a very suitable travel time for Florida. The more moderate temperatures and lower humidity from autumn to spring are usually perceived as more pleasant.
