Kiribati Weather and Climate
According to COUNTRYAAH, Kiribati is a State of Oceania (811 km²). Capital: Bairiki. Population: 97,000 (2008 estimate). Language: English (official), Gilbertese. Religion: Catholics 55.3%, Protestants 35.7%, others 9%. Currency unit: Australian dollar (100 cents). Borders: Pacific Ocean. Member of: Commonwealth, UN and CP, EU associate.
Population
The population is of Micronesian stock in the Gilbert, Polynesian in the other islands: the majority (98.8%) is made up of I-Kiribati; however, only 20 islands are populated, namely Ocean, the entire Gilbert archipelago and three atolls of the Line Islands. The population density is 120 residents/km², but the majority of the population is concentrated in the Gilberts, where it is decidedly overabundant with respect to the available food resources. The migratory currents that from the Gilberts have headed to the nearby island of Ocean and the major islands of the Line Islands are a clear sign of this demographic tension, which, however, does not seem to have been resolved. The atoll of Tarawa is home to the capital Bairiki, whose urban agglomeration accommodates just under half of the country’s population.
