Iguazu Falls, Argentina Weather and Climate
General and geography
According to abbreviationfinder, the Iguazú waterfalls are located directly in the border area between Argentina and Brazil, not far from the three-country corner with Paraguay.
Due to the different national languages Spanish and Portuguese, there are also different spellings for the world-famous waterfalls, as the Brazilians write the Iguaçu river, whereas the Argentine write Iguazú. Of course, both variants denote the same natural spectacle.
In total, over 250 larger and smaller waterfalls extend over a width of 2.7 kilometers, making Iguazú one of the undoubtedly most breathtaking waterfalls in the world.
Since the largest area is on the Argentine side, the Brazilian side of the national park offers a better overview and fantastic panoramic views. The border crossing is fairly unbureaucratic, which is why we strongly recommend visiting both sides when visiting the Iguazú waterfalls.
The city of Foz do Iguacu itself is not worth seeing, but it has a small airport with good connections to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
Climate at the Iguazú waterfalls
The region around Iguaçu or Iguazú has a humid, subtropical climate that is opposite to the European seasons. Midsummer is logically between the end of November and the end of February, while winter is from the beginning of June to the end of August.
The climate in summer is especially hot and sometimes quite humid, with the highest average temperatures often recorded around Christmas time until the end of January. The humidity is also extremely high during this time. Precipitation can occur in the region at any time of the year.
Nevertheless, the Brazilian winter, especially the travel month July, not only significantly cooler but also noticeably drier. It can now cool down to 10 degrees, especially at night, while average values of around 24 degrees Celsius are usually achieved during the day.
When is the best time to go to the Iguazú Falls?
The waterfalls in Iguazú are worth a visit all year round, although the main season for South Americans is mainly during the summer holidays (i.e. in the German winter around December and January). The falls reach their highest water level between December and March, which is not least due to the higher amounts of rain.
The best time to travel to Iguazú also depends, so to speak, on your own expectations: the Brazilian winter is too fresh for some visitors, the sky is often clear for that and there are fantastic rainbows. In addition, the paths are now easier to pass when the water level is slightly lower and additional outdoor activities are possible.
Our tip for the best time to travel to the Iguazú Waterfalls is due to a combination of pleasant weather with moderate temperatures and a good chance of blue skies for even more beautiful impressions and photos. Accordingly, we particularly recommend March to early May and August to September to visitors.
Due to the good travel conditions outside of these core times, we can recommend the entire period from February (i.e. after the end of the absolute main season) to the end of September to our readers with a clear conscience.
