Costa Brava, Spain Weather and Climate
General & Geography
The popular holiday region Costa Brava (“Wild Coast”) covers over 200 kilometers of the northeastern Mediterranean coast of the Spanish region of Catalonia. It extends from Portbou on the Pyrenees to Lloret de Mar.
The metropolitan province of Barcelona begins at the southern end of the Costa Brava. The coast owes its name to the partly rugged rock formations and steeply sloping Serras. Nevertheless, there are also a number of wonderful sandy beaches, including at Sant Pere Pescador and the resort of Empuriabrava.
The overall rough coast is unsurpassed in terms of natural beauty, and active vacationers and bathing vacationers alike get their money’s worth on the Costa Brava. In addition, there are a multitude of exciting attractions in the inland, from the Salvador Dalí Museum to old Romanesque monastery ruins and picturesque old towns.
The main tourist centers of the Costa Brava are Calella (de la Costa), Lloret de Mar, Ampuriabrava, Rosas, Tossa de Mar and Playa de Aro. The towns of Playa de Pals, L’Escala, Malgrat de Mar, Santa Susanna and Pineda de Mar are also enjoying increasing popularity.
Those who do not travel to the Costa Brava with their own car can easily reach the region via the international airport Girona-Costa Brava around 13 kilometers outside the provincial capital Girona. Traveling via Barcelona (around 90 kilometers from Lloret de Mar) is also a cheap and fast option.
Climate on the Costa Brava (Spain)
Abbreviated as GRO by abbreviationfinder, Costa Brava has a Mediterranean climate, which is always cooled down a bit by the sometimes strong winds (Tramuntana), especially in spring and autumn. The temperatures are therefore on average a little below the values of Andalusia or the Costa Blanca.
Nevertheless, the Costa Brava climate can be described as very pleasant and mild. Between June and September, the daytime temperatures are always above 25 degrees, with peaks of more than 30 ° C being possible on hot days.
The sometimes icy land wind in spring and autumn sometimes reaches storm strength and makes these travel times on the Costa Brava somewhat unpredictable. The coast has around 210 sunny days a year and statistically experiences the heaviest rainfall between September and November.
When is the best time to travel to the Costa Brava?
The best weather conditions are in midsummer, the season generally starts in the course of May and usually ends at the beginning of October. The best time to travel to the Costa Brava is from June to September, with July and August being the absolute high season.
Outside the tourist season, the Costa Brava is very quiet and many hotels are closed. Nevertheless, the edge months of April and October can still be very suitable for a relaxed trip, with pleasant water temperatures still prevailing, especially in October.
