Comoros Weather and Climate
According to COUNTRYAAH, Comoros is a State of Southeast Africa (1,862 km²). Capital: Moroni. Population: 646,000 (2008 estimate). Language: Arabic, Comorian and French (official), Bantu, Swahili. Religion: Sunni Muslims 98.4%, Christians 1.6%. Monetary unit: Comorian franc (100 cents). Human Development Index: 0.572 (137th place). Borders: Indian Ocean. Member of: Arab League, OCI, UN and AU, EU associate.
The Comoros, islands of volcanic origin, are largely covered by forests. The ethnic composition of the population is determined by the crossing of the original Bantu population with Arabs, Indians and Malagasy. Almost all of the population is made up of Comorians (97%), followed by Makoa (1.6%), French (0.4%) and others (1%). Due to the high birth rate and fertility rates and the decreasing mortality rate, the percentage of young people is very significant (in 2007 young people under 15 were around 42%); this fact, linked to the rather high demographic density compared to the available resources, means that there is a strong push towards emigration (in particular towards Zanzibar, Madagascar and East Africa). The density is 347 residents / km², but the population is not uniformly distributed in the archipelago: the most populated island is Nzwani, while Mwali is the one characterized by the lowest population density value, which in any case is around 100 residents/km². About two thirds of the country’s population live in small rural settlements with difficult reciprocal connections. About one third of the population lives in urban centers; the largest is the capital, Moroni, which is located on the west coast of Gran Comore and carries out important commercial activities. The cities of Mutsamudu and Fomboni constitute, respectively, the main centers of Anjouan and Mohéli.
