Geographical location
In the southeast of Mexico, Cancun is located directly on the coast. Short for CUN by abbreviationfinder, the city of Cancun is located in the aisle between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. Cancun is the tourist center of the Riviera Maya vacation area and belongs to the state of Quintana Roo.
Cancun is only 100 kilometers from Cuba as the crow flies and was specially planned and implemented for tourism. Around 628,000 inhabitants live here on an area of 2107 square kilometers, and over 3.5 million tourists travel to the region every year. Most of the hotels are located on a narrow strip of land directly on the beach.
The region has a very good infrastructure. Cancun Airport is a few kilometers outside of the city center, and planes fly non-stop from Frankfurt to Cancun several times a week. The wonderful holiday region can be reached in about 12 hours.
Climate in Cancun
Cancun is known for its very warm and wonderful weather. The temperatures scratch the mark of 30 ° C all year round. From March to October this is even exceeded significantly. The subtropical climatic zone ensures year-round precipitation, which in the main season is, however, at low values of around 50 millimeters per month.
The daytime temperatures on the Riviera Maya are always between 28 and 35 degrees, although it can get oppressively hot in summer. The subtropical climate brings with it the rainy season in Cancun in the middle of the year. During this time, cyclones can also reach the coast. The hurricane season officially runs from June through November, with most hurricanes occurring in between August and October. However, Cancun and the Riviera Maya are rarely hit directly.
In the last 25 years exactly two hurricanes have hit the coast directly, modern early warning systems make it possible nowadays to predict hurricanes five days before their arrival. So there is no danger for vacationers, as the hoteliers are well prepared for the “worst case”.
When to go to Cancun
Basically, Cancun and the surrounding resorts of the Riviera Maya can be described as a year-round destination, as the temperatures are high all year round and the weather is mostly sunny. Due to the effects of the rainy season with existing hurricane danger, the summer months can be traveled with some restrictions. In addition, it will be oppressively hot in and around Cancun from mid- May.
We therefore recommend the period from December to the end of April as the best travel time for Cancun. In the best travel time, the temperatures rise to up to 32 degrees, the water temperature is comfortably warm at 26 to 27 degrees Celsius. You don’t have to freeze at night either, the temperatures drop to a minimum of 20 ° C. The months are the driest February to April, we particularly recommend this travel time to you.

The annual average temperature is 27.2 ° C. For comparison: Munich reaches an average of 8.6 ° C, in Berlin it is 9.6 ° C. The warmest month is August (29.7 ° C), coldest month of January with mean values of 24.1 ° C. The maximum water temperature is 29 ° C. Comfortable bathing is possible at these temperatures. All months have a water temperature of at least 21 ° C and are therefore suitable for a beach holiday.
Precipitation
The annual precipitation is 1300 mm on 112 days with precipitation. For comparison: In Munich, 967 mm, in Berlin 570 mm, precipitation is measured annually. The months of September and October are considered the rainy season, as more than 175 mm of precipitation can be expected per month. Overall, around 453.8 mm of precipitation can be expected in the rainy season. Snowfall is generally not expected in any month.
