Burundi Weather and Climate

Located in east central Africa between 2 and 4 ° south of the equator, Burundi is a landlocked country with no direct access to the sea. The country borders on Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, and shares in the southwest part of Lake Tanganyika. Burundi is part of the Great Lakes region. With an area of 27,834 km², Burundi is one of the dwarf states of Africa. The geography of East Africa is characterized by diverse features in the landscape.

In terms of settlement, Burundi is divided into 18 provinces, each of which is divided into 116 districts. The smallest administrative sizes are the collines, the hills, which often only comprise a few villages or settlement groups.

Climate

Due to its geographical location near the equator Burundi has a tropical climate with two rainy seasons (March / April: large rainy season and September / October / November: small rainy season). Overall, the climate is strongly characterized by the altitude and therefore varies with the topography. The dry season in the summer months from June to September is relatively strong. During this dry season, an average of only 7 mm of rain per month falls very often. There is another dry season in January and February. However, this is very short compared to the first dry season. Most of the rain falls in April, with the eastern slopes of the mountains receiving the most rainfall (an average of 1500 mm), at least 1000 mm on the plateau and in the depression of Lake Tanganyika. Typical as for all tropical regions are convective heavy rains. This also increases the risk of landslides and soil erosion in general. The least rainfall is measured in the eastern savanna region. There can be a dry season of 4-5 months here. The temperatures are – typical for tropical climates – consistently high on an annual average (time of day climates) and are only differentiated by the altitude. On average it is 16 °C to 20 °C on the plateaus and around 24 °C on Lake Tanganyika (weather forecast for Bujumbura, climate diagram for Bujumbura); on the mountain ranges it can get really cool at night.
