Azerbaijan Weather and Climate
According to COUNTRYAAH, Azerbaijan is a state of Western Asia (86,600 km²). Capital: Baku. Administrative division: administrative units (4). Population: 9,898,100 (census 2018). Former Soviet Republic, Azerbaijan proclaimed itself independent on August 30, 1991. In 1995 a new Constitution entered into force which made the country a presidential republic; the highest office of the state, also at the head of the army, is elected, by direct suffrage, for five years; it also holds executive power together with the Council of Ministers, appointed by the President himself and led by the Prime Minister. The Legislative Assembly, also in office for five years, is made up of 125 members. Azerbaijani territory includes the capital region Baku, the Naxçivan region, bordering Iran, and a number of other dependent territories (6 cities and 59 regions). Nagorno-Karabah is also found in Azerbaijani territory, an enclave inhabited mainly by Armenians. The judicial system is administered by the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals. Some particular matters envisaged by the Constitution are under the jurisdiction of the Constitutional Court, while for matters of business and finance, the Economic Court is the judge. The military apparatus includes the three traditional corps and the military service lasts 18 months (12 for graduates). Cultural center of reference for many Muslims of the Russian Empire before 1918, subsequently organized at the educational level according to the Soviet system, Azerbaijan has operated, since the 1990s, a conspicuous reform in the field of education. The primary cycle begins at the age of 6 and ends after 4 years; secondary education starts at age of 10 and includes a first cycle lasting 5 years and a second cycle lasting 2 years. Higher education takes place at numerous universities and several research institutes coordinated by the Baku National Academy of Sciences. Among the most important (all in Baku) the Petroleum Academy, the universities of Medicine and Economics. Outside the capital there are, for example, the Academy of Agriculture and the University of Technology in Gäncä.
