It doesn’t feel like much time has passed since we were being assailed by Jordan V reissues, but its been nearly five years. That’s almost half a decade since Tinker Hatfield and Michael Jordan caused mild fanboy pandemonium with a Q&A session followed by a quick drop of Grape reissues. We were spolit. The materials on those purple-accented masterpieces creased in seconds — we don’t think Jerry Seinfeld or John Goodman in ‘King Ralph’ mode would have stood for that.
We got suckered in by those easily-ruined Green Bean Scotchlite versions (the reflective Raging Bull versions suffered the same fate too) that made our heels bleed. In all that excitement we managed to sleep on some banging colourways of superior quality like the Deep Burgundy makeup. We got dazzled by the hype. The Military Green versions were crack too. We won’t be overlooking the quieter takes on this shoe again.
We still think that using most of the fantastic player sample colourways of the last few years on the Jordan V-looking Sixty Plus squandered a few potential Retro+ masterpieces, but as a lead in to a new wave of retros of many people’s favourite chapter in the Air Jordan saga, the Wolf Grey version is a shrewd move. That Premio Bin 23 version was tremendous (especially when it inexplicably dropped at a low RRP in the UK) and the Tokyo-only T23s are incredible. But they’re a major eBay BIN away from your shoe stash.
These are the first real offerings and they achieve a key goal in a new variation of a sacred cow – they can sit alongside the original 1990 versions with ease. Some might claim that they’re a little obvious — the XI works in grey, and the IV and IX worked in that neutral palette to, but it’s a plain look that lets the silhouette do the talking. The white lining is cool with us (though it looks to be splitting opinions) and the reflective tongue complements the upper too — a blueish tinge to the outsole reminds us of the pre-Christmas Cool Grey alterations and if it saves us money on imported Sea Glow, it’s good with us. Even those recent retros are getting a touch of the urine-yellow to the base.
One joy of a makeup like this is that there's no precedent for us to shout, "That colour's wrong!" The quality's decent too, with suede being a fair replacement for the Durabuck this could have been made out of. We can give or take contrast stitching on a shoe and here it's not exactly glaring. Add in the fact that unlike say, the VII or IV, the V generally looks like it did back when we were scheming on how to raise £90.
This is one of the best Jordan Brand releases in months, and they'll be on sale in the Crooked store from midnight this saturday, with an RRP (at time of writing) of £105. That's £15 inflation in 21 years, and the non-synthetic materials on the upper means you're spared our usual build-quality grumbling. Excellent stuff with some year-round (provided you give them a spray) potential. |
