On reflection I think it is the vulnerability that I see in both a child and an animal - that they are totally reliant on you for their care and development - that makes me feel this way. Just like children, animals are also total individuals and the delicate challenge is capturing a part of that unique personality in paint. As a child I always loved drawing and apart from being obsessed with drawing horses was also a successful showrider. I started painting in oils under the tutelage of my grandmother who was an established Adelaide artist. At a young age my work was awarded in the Young World Art Awards, which were judged in Asia. My drawings and paintings appeared in local magazines and media. I studied Visual Arts in Melbourne and have since exhibited and sold my work. While many artists have influenced my work I particularly admire the Australian Impressionists’ mastery of light and the extraordinary colour combinations of Mark Rothko, which for me interact in a way that verges on spiritual. Beyond my art the other big joys in my life are my daughter, the beauty of the outdoors and the pleasure of fresh air and fresh food. I also love meeting people and hearing their stories.
