Last year we hit up Patta about their underrated ZX 7000 with its inspiration from 'Seinfeld's parking
lot Patagonia outfit for our 'Best Of '08', and their 2009 5th anniversary celebrations have meant plenty
more footwear followed. adidas, PRO-Keds, Reebok, Keep and Converse makeups, plus HUF and Stussy apparel
and the opening of a new store in the shape of Precinct 5 were all significant in their execution, but
their return to Nike and the Air Max line was the big story. Two makeups that followed the original
colour block, a more elaborate corduroy outing and a hardwearing black version that had a few people
going ballistic made up this quartet. Bar an initial leak of a white sample pair, they were kept on a
hush-hush tip.
Shock and awe with the no-promo approach seemed to work well and dropping from late Halloween until mid
December with a minimal heads-up, they reawakened some interest in many jaded. By recent releases and
immediately found their audience. Today Complex's panel deemed them the year's second best sneaker -
quite an achievement among an NYCentric collection of predominantly bulkier models. We interrupted the
homie Lee at Patta's umpteenth playback of Jay Electronica's 'Exhibit C' to interrogate him about the AM1
collaborations and what became of that mystery white canvas sample...
Lee, Patta's fifth year celebrations were no joke in terms of shoe projects...did they all go to plan?
How much planning went into 2009's rollout?
Most of the planning really took place a year prior in order to have enough time for development and
things of that nature. As you know, the process for collaboration projects takes up quite a period of
time, from the initial idea all the way down to the final product rollout. I'd say 90% the projects we
have worked on turned out according to plan, the other 10% was just rolling with the punches.
Were the AM87s always meant to be the grand finale so to speak, or were you at the behest of windows for
production and all that boring stuff?
The Air Max project was definitely subject to time constraints and such. The initial idea was to spread
them out across the second half of '09, but thankfully the "grand finale" idea is working out well.
As Euro-heads, I think you guys are always best placed to be reworking the Maxes, America doesn't seem to
have a Max fetish like our side of the planet does. What was your first pair, as I know Amsterdam has
always had a running shoe legacy?
Yes, definitely! I remember how we used to go to the sports store after school every other day and drool
on the window over the OG Epics. The hefty pricetag of 500,00 guilders then (roughly the price of a pair
of Air Yeezys now) was way out of our league as kids. Later on I did manage to convince my parents to
purchase my first pair of Air Maxes when they came out, The 87 originals, blue womens coloorway. Plus I
got the Epics on sale that same year, ha!
These Maxes were also part of an "experiment" where you tried to keep 'em under wraps until release with
mixed results, were you happy with the eventual no-promo release? You can't evade the all-seeing eye of
the internet.
Yes, we have noticed what a pain it can be to try and keep things under wraps nowadays, but at the same
time we are very appreciative of the people's interest in Patta-related product and just try to take
those setbacks in stride. Either way we were very happy with the no promo-type release. For a little
while it brought back the experience of unknowingly walking in a store and striking gold, so to speak.
This feeling goes hand in hand with our 87 sentiments.
Were your colourways all concept-free? We like the lack of 'story' - are they just Patta crew members'
notion of a perfect Air Max?
They were all concept-free indeed, the Air Max remains a great shoe as is. Definitely not to knock
anybody, but the "story" thing has been done over and over by most, including ourselves. We felt it would
nice for a change to get rid of restrictions put on by a story or concept, to just stray away from a
script and create whatever we felt like creating that day.
Along the way, did you scrap any concepts for shoes or are the finished results the original concept?
The one pair that got away are the ones most people have probably seen on eBay a while back. The white
canvas literally got dirty as soon as we took the sample shoe out the box. Now we don't mind dirtying our
shoes up a bit, but we like to keep them crisp for longer than 5 minutes. |
