Air Max 87s have been flogged to death over the last few years, and since 2002, the shape has gone a little awry...but, whereas some solid colourways hit the saleracks for those willing to play the waiting game, some just vamoosed before we ever made good on our promises to stock up. The reds are one of the most perfect examples of a synergy between a trademark Nike makeup and a timeless design - and it's a testament to the debut Max's brilliance (Nike - please bring back those specially-commissioned HOA videos) that a shoe with a considerable level of admittedly groundbreaking gimmickry, hasn't been topped since, and still remains an office favourite. But the saturation of reds, compared to the relative scarcity of reseller favourite, the infrared Air Max 90, meant we stocked up come TK Maxx time, but throughout the '00s, blues have been a bit more elusive.
Timed to drop alongside the Maxim 1, a shoe we're fairly enamoured with, the heavyweight daddy of them all still holds weight, but there's a deliberate lack of stockists for this quick strike reissue, like the queue-inducing '90 drop a few months back (twinned with a weird 'premium' version that was borderline dope, but kind of unnecessary) that sort-of tied with the AM90 Current last Summer, these blues and reds probably aren't destined for your local discount superstore. There was a time when shoes like this didn't seem to carry the same reseller clout as speckly Dunks. Things done changed.
We don't know whether demand turned to comfortable shoes with a bonafide UK street-level pedigree (alright, maybe the Light and 90 were a little more ubiquitous on these shores) because of shrewd marketing, regional tastes for runners or merely because these look so good pristine that you wear them in fear of a misplaced clod foot on public transport, rain or even the filth in the air if you're a city deweller, and need at least one backup pair for regular warm weather rotation. the bubble may have shrunk, the Swoosh got smaller, that toebox changed and many, many further devolutions, but this is still a classic that should form the backbone of any trainer horde, whether it's a handfuls or stack upon stack of styles.
We'd rather see this eminently replaceable duo treated as a staple, available year-round in case of a stray coffee splash, or taxi seat grease, but, in our best Morgan Freeman narrative voice, we wish we could tell you that, but the athletic footwear industry is no fairy-tale world. Subsequently they're dropping in a few stores on the 17th of this month, including 1948. |
